Calling All Sri Lankan Cricket Players for Sanga's Scottish Club

David Mackay, Chairman of the Bute County Cricket Club has contacted us to inform that they are looking for Cricket Players to join their “Bute County Cricket Club”. David and his team is very keen to speak to Sri Lankan players in Scotland as they already have strong ties with Sri Lanka as a country. Also, they have offered their first Associate Membership of their club to the Sri Lankan Veteran Cricketer Kumar Sangakkara.

Following is David’s email to SLAS detailing his background as well as the information and plans ahead for the Bute County Cricket Club.

Hi,

Many thanks for your swift reply. I am delighted that you know our story about Sanga; my son lives in Sri Lanka (Unawatuna in Galle) and my Dad spent many years there as a seaman. I visited your fabulous island in 2013 and was very impressed by its beauty, history and positive minded people.

I was a former tutor at the University (American History) until 6 months ago when I retired and moved permanently to the Isle of Bute. Once there I became the Chairman of Bute County Cricket Club. My first action was to enlist the iconic Sri Lankan cricketer Kumar Sangakkara as an Associate Member of the Club. This move has brought us great publicity in the worldwide cricketing fraternity, especially in Sri Lanka.

We are looking for players for our Club and would like to put up an advert aimed at Sri Lankan players in the West of Scotland. Are you able to advise me on this matter?

Bute County were founded in 1898, but have always struggled with a lack of numbers - there are only 6,600 on the island and a great many are in the elderly category. I have been club chairman for ten weeks and have managed to sort out the usual range of shortcomings in the club administration. We have a great PR team - both former journalists (one ex-BBC) and we have weekly coverage in the local paper, The Buteman.

We have 16 league matches to play this season; 9 on Bute and 7 on the mainland. Numbers are always short and we would notify by Wednesday in advance. If you have any prospective players they could initially meet up with us at an away game: first 3 away games are:

  • 2 May at Garscube (Glasgow University Playing Fields) v Cavaliers;
  • 9 May at Glasgow Academy Fields ( Anniesland Road) v Alps;
  • 16 May at Old Anniesland (Glasgow High Fields) v GHK.

Anyone who is interested should contact me and I will make the arrangements as required.

Have a look at our website:  Bute County Cricket Club

Once again, many thanks for your support - we aim to make Bute the Cricketing Isle!

Cheers,

David Mackay
Chairman, Bute Cricket
